Gaziantep (Aintab) · Today: Turkey
Gaziantep came under Ottoman rule in 1516; it remained an Ottoman city until the end of the empire. It changed hands in between; there are 2 separate Ottoman periods.
The city joined the Ottoman lands with Selim I's Egyptian campaign, after which building activity quickened.
Sultan: Selim IIn June 1839 the city was briefly occupied by the forces of Muhammad Ali of Egypt.
Sultan: Mahmud IIAfter Mudros the British occupied the city; a year later, on 5 November 1919, they handed it to the French.
Sultan: Mehmed VIThe Grand National Assembly gave the city, which had resisted for ten months, the title 'Gazi' on 6 February 1921; the French left on 25 December 1921 after the Treaty of Ankara.
How the total is counted: years of actual Ottoman rule are added up. Temporary occupations shorter than a year (that were reversed) are not subtracted; they appear as notes in the chronology.
On the atlas map the city lies in the region “Antep–Kilis”. Map colours work at region level, so the city's own dates may differ from the region's by a few years.
