Also known as: Tanzimat Edict, Edict of Gülhane
The period of reorganisation that began with the Hatt-ı Hümayun of Gülhane, proclaimed on 3 November 1839.
The word means “reorganisations”. The Edict of Gülhane promised the security of subjects' life, property and honour, the fair levying of taxes and an orderly system of military service. During the Tanzimat, led by Mustafa Reşid Pasha, sweeping reforms were made in administration, law, education and finance.
