Reform Edict of 1856

Also known as: Islahat Fermanı

The edict proclaimed on 18 February 1856 that gave non-Muslim subjects rights equal to those of Muslims.

It was proclaimed at the Sublime Porte at the end of the Crimean War, before the Congress of Paris met. The edict promised to remove religious distinctions in taxation, military service, state office and admission to schools; the jizya was abolished by it.
