Celali revolts

Also known as: Celalis

The widespread revolts that shook Anatolia from the late 16th century.

The name comes from Şah Velî, son of Celâl, who rebelled at the beginning of the 16th century. The first Celali movements arose partly under Safavid influence; from the late 16th century they became a major problem joined by unemployed soldiers, sekban musketeers and peasants. The revolts led to the abandonment of villages and great migrations in Anatolia.
