Today: Turkey
Kırklareli came under Ottoman rule in 1368; it remained an Ottoman city until the end of the empire. It changed hands in between; there are 2 separate Ottoman periods.
Conquered under Murad I; sources give 1366 or 1368–69 for the conquest.
Sultan: Murad IThe Russians took the town in the war of 1877–1878; San Stefano gave it to Bulgaria, but under the Treaty of Berlin it stayed Ottoman.
Sultan: Abdulhamid IIIn the Balkan War the Bulgarians occupied the town on 24 October 1912; it was liberated on 21 July 1913.
Sultan: Mehmed VOn 26 July 1920 the Greek army occupied the city.
The town was recovered on 10 November 1922.
How the total is counted: years of actual Ottoman rule are added up. Temporary occupations shorter than a year (that were reversed) are not subtracted; they appear as notes in the chronology.
On the atlas map the city lies in the region “Edirne–Kırklareli”. Map colours work at region level, so the city's own dates may differ from the region's by a few years.
