Committee of Union and Progress

Also known as: İttihat ve Terakki, Unionists

The political organisation active from 1889 to 1918 that was decisive in the restoration of the constitution in 1908 and in the government that followed.

The committee was founded as a secret organisation against the rule of Abdülhamid II and brought about the restoration of the constitution in 1908. After 1913 it took over the government completely and was decisive in the Ottoman entry into the First World War. At the end of the war, in 1918, it dissolved itself.
