In April 1517 Bıyıklı Mehmed Pasha, governor of Diyarbekir, took the city from its Safavid governor.

    Note

Nader Shah besieged the city; governor Hüseyin Celil Pasha defended it.

    Sultan: Mahmud I
  3. 1918

At Mudros the city was in Turkish hands; the British entered it on 8 (or 10) November 1918 in breach of the armistice.

  4. 1926
    Note

How the total is counted: years of actual Ottoman rule are added up. Temporary occupations shorter than a year (that were reversed) are not subtracted; they appear as notes in the chronology.

In the atlas

On the atlas map the city lies in the region “Mosul–Shahrizor”. Map colours work at region level, so the city's own dates may differ from the region's by a few years.
