Today: Turkey
Afyonkarahisar came under Ottoman rule in 1429; it remained an Ottoman city until the end of the empire. It changed hands in between; there are 2 separate Ottoman periods.
After the Battle of Ankara the city, sacked by Timur's troops, returned to Yakub Bey of Germiyan.
Sultan: Bayezid IOn Yakub Bey's death the city passed for good to the Ottomans, as his will provided.
Sultan: Murad IIIn the War of Independence the city was under Greek occupation for about a year.
The Great Offensive, commanded by Atatürk himself, began near the city; it was liberated on 27 August 1922.
How the total is counted: years of actual Ottoman rule are added up. Temporary occupations shorter than a year (that were reversed) are not subtracted; they appear as notes in the chronology.
On the atlas map the city lies in the region “Germiyan (Kütahya–Afyon–Uşak)”. Map colours work at region level, so the city's own dates may differ from the region's by a few years.
