Nizam-ı Cedid

Also known as: New Order

“New Order”: the reforms of Selim III's reign and the new army raised on the European model in this period.

Selim III (1789–1807) launched a broad programme to renew the military, financial and administrative order of the state; its best-known part was the Nizam-ı Cedid army trained on European lines. The reforms met the resistance of the Janissaries and their supporters; with the Kabakçı Mustafa revolt of 1807 the Nizam-ı Cedid was abolished and Selim III deposed.
