Herzegovina Uprising

Revolt · 1875

In the second half of the 19th century peasant uprisings caused by the land system multiplied in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The revolt that began in Herzegovina in 1875 and spread to Bosnia took on a political character; the insurgents were backed by Russia, Serbia and Montenegro. The reform plan drawn up by the Austrian foreign minister Andrássy could not stop the unrest spreading to Bulgaria in 1876. Deepened by Great Power intervention, the crisis led to the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877–78; at the Congress of Berlin the administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina was given to Austria-Hungary, whose occupation was completed on 20 October 1878.

Abdulaziz in brief
