Edirne Incident

Revolt · 1703

In the crisis following the defeat at Vienna, the interference in state affairs of Mustafa II's tutor, the şeyhülislam Seyyid Feyzullah Efendi, and his filling of high posts with his own men created a broad opposition. On 17 July 1703 the armourers (cebeci), demanding ten overdue instalments of pay, began the resistance; joined by janissaries, sayyids, madrasa students and then merchants and tradesmen, the uprising spread over all of Istanbul. The rebels marched against the sultan at Edirne; when the troops from Edirne went over to them, Mustafa II was left alone. On 22 August 1703 he went to his brother Ahmed and gave up the throne with the words “Brother, the troops want you as sultan.” Feyzullah Efendi was killed by the insurgents.
