The city was taken in 1569, occupied by the Spanish in 1573 and recovered in 1574 by Sinan Pasha's expedition, becoming an Ottoman province. Over time Tunisia was governed with wide autonomy by local beys (the Husainids) under Ottoman suzerainty. France made Tunisia a protectorate in 1881.
Hayreddin Barbarossa added the city to the Ottoman lands, but Charles V took it in July 1535.
The city passed to the Ottomans again.
The city was occupied by Spain a second time.
The city was recovered, joined the Ottoman lands for good and became a province.
On 12 May 1881 France signed the Treaty of Bardo with the bey of Tunis and took the country under its protection.
