Algiers joined Ottoman rule in 1519, when Hızır Reis (Barbarossa Hayreddin) placed it under Ottoman authority, and remained attached to the Ottoman state until the French occupation of 1830.
In 1519 Hızır Reis asked Selim I for help with a petition from the people of Algiers; Algiers thus became Ottoman and the centre of the naval wars in the western Mediterranean. Over time the region was governed with wide autonomy by beylerbeys, pashas and deys. France occupied Algiers in 1830.
Answering the townspeople's call for help against Spain, the Barbarossa brothers seized the city.
With a petition of October 1519 Hızır Reis (Hayreddin Barbarossa) placed himself under Selim I; Algiers joined the Ottoman lands.
The French occupied the city of Algiers on 5 July 1830.
