Most of today's Romania consisted of Wallachia and Moldavia, principalities subject to the Ottomans; Timișoara and its region, however, were a directly ruled Ottoman province from 1552 to 1716.
For centuries the voivodeships of Wallachia and Moldavia remained tributary states governed by their own princes; the atlas shows these lands separately from the directly ruled regions. Timișoara was taken in 1552 and made the seat of a province, and it was taken by the Habsburgs in 1716. Romania gained its independence in 1878.
Sokollu Mehmed Pasha besieged the fortress in October 1551 but failed.
After three weeks of resistance against Kara Ahmed Pasha the garrison surrendered on 26 July 1552; the province of Temeşvar was created.
The province lasted until 1716, when the city fell to Austria.
