The central part of Hungary was under Ottoman rule as the province of Buda from 1541 to the late 1680s.
The Battle of Mohács in 1526 shattered the Kingdom of Hungary; Süleyman took Buda in 1541 and made it a province, leaving the country divided into three parts. Eger was taken in 1596 on Mehmed III's campaign. After the defeat at Vienna in 1683, Buda was lost in 1686, and the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 handed most of Hungary to the Habsburgs.
After the victory at Mohács Süleyman entered the city for the first time but did not keep it.
Süleyman appointed a governor-general and made Buda the seat of a new province.
On Mehmed III's campaign, after three weeks of fighting, the garrison surrendered on 12 October 1596.
The Holy League army took the city in the general assault of 2 September 1686, ending a century and a half of Ottoman rule.
Besieged in the wars after Vienna, the fortress surrendered when supplies ran out, on 14 December 1687.
