Khedive

Also known as: Hidiv

The title given to the governors of Egypt from 1867.

After Muhammad Ali Pasha, Egypt was ruled by governors from his line and gained wide autonomy. In 1867 the governor Ismail Pasha was given the title khedive. Although Egypt legally remained part of the Ottoman state, after 1882 it came under de facto British control; the atlas shows this separately.
