Şahkulu Rebellion

Revolt · 1511

Şahkulu gathered pro-Safavid Turkmens in the Teke region, won a success at Alaşehir and then besieged Antalya without taking it. Bayezid II sent Grand Vizier Hadım Ali Pasha against him together with Prince Ahmed. Şahkulu routed Haydar Pasha, governor of Karaman, who tried to block his way, and withdrew eastwards. Ali Pasha caught up with him at Çubuk near Sivas; in the battle of 2 July 1511 Ali Pasha, left alone with his janissaries, was killed. The fate of the victorious Şahkulu is unknown; one report says he was killed by a bullet.
