Deposition of Sultan İbrahim

Revolt · 1648

Sultan İbrahim's erratic behaviour and the meddling of palace women and favourites in state affairs had caused revolts in the provinces such as that of Varvar Ali Pasha and deep discontent in the capital. The janissary officers, the ulema and the statesmen united to depose the sultan. With the consent of his grandmother Kösem Sultan, the statesmen and the janissaries, his seven-year-old son Mehmed IV was enthroned on 8 August 1648. The deposed İbrahim was strangled ten days later.
