Izmit (Nicomedia) · Today: Turkey
Izmit came under Ottoman rule in 1337; it remained an Ottoman city until the end of the empire. It changed hands in between; there are 2 separate Ottoman periods.
The defeated Byzantine emperor kept the city for a while by agreeing to pay tribute.
Sultan: OrhanThe city passed to the Ottomans and was entrusted to Orhan Bey's son Süleyman Pasha.
Sultan: OrhanOn 6 July 1920 the city was occupied, first by the British and then by the Greeks.
The city was liberated on 28 June 1921.
How the total is counted: years of actual Ottoman rule are added up. Temporary occupations shorter than a year (that were reversed) are not subtracted; they appear as notes in the chronology.
On the atlas map the city lies in the region “İzmit–Sakarya (Kocaeli)”. Map colours work at region level, so the city's own dates may differ from the region's by a few years.
