Also known as: life-term tax farm
Granting a person the right to collect a tax source for life, in return for a lump sum paid in advance.
The malikane system was introduced in 1695 and soon spread among the mukataas, which made up about half of state revenue. The state received a large advance payment (muaccele), and the holder collected the tax for life. The system helped to finance wars, but it also prepared the ground for the rise of powerful provincial notable families.
