Also known as: Anatolian beyliks, principality
A state ruled by a bey; the name for the Turkmen states founded as the Anatolian Seljuk state broke up.
After the defeat at Kösedağ in 1243 the Anatolian Seljuk state declined rapidly, and principalities such as the Karamanids, the Germiyanids and the Candarids emerged in Anatolia. The Ottoman state was one of these principalities, founded on the Byzantine frontier. This is why the atlas uses “principality” and “state” rather than “empire” for the period before 1453.
