Atlas of the Sultans · About
Last updated: 2 November 2026
The Atlas of the Sultans is an independent, free educational website that tells Ottoman history through maps. Its aim is to show, year by year and with sources, how the state grew and shrank between 1299 and 1922.
Dates, borders and events are based on academic atlases, encyclopaedias (especially the TDV Encyclopaedia of Islam) and historical studies. How the borders are drawn, how areas are calculated and the full bibliography are on the Method and sources page. Historical portraits come from public-domain works; some images (e.g. the sultans on horseback) are AI-generated, and this is clearly stated where they appear.
Some points in history are disputed. If you spot a wrong date, border or fact, please write to us with a source and we will check and correct it: [email protected]
